OpenAI will show ads while you create images in ChatGPT
Image generation is becoming an advertising space. From later this month, a first group of brands will test labelled visual ads inside ChatGPT's image tool in the US. Here is what is changing, how it works and what it means for brands.
What happened
OpenAI announced that it will begin testing visual ads during image generation in ChatGPT later this month in the United States. While someone waits for an image to be created, they may see a labelled ad from one of the brands in the test.
The ad images can show product inspiration, a product in use, or what a service makes possible. They are kept apart from the picture the person asked for, so a brand never appears inside someone's own image.
The key details
- Where and when: United States only, starting later in October 2026, with an initial group of advertisers.
- Who sees them: people on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. Higher paid plans have stayed ad-free since ads first launched.
- How they look: clearly labelled visual ads shown during image creation, separate from the generated image.
- Brand safety: DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are running brand-suitability pilots. OpenAI says the partners test its standards in a controlled environment and do not access private conversations.
- Measurement: OpenAI also widened its list of measurement partners, including Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp for conversions and AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch and Kochava for attribution.
The background
This is not ChatGPT's first ad format. OpenAI announced ads in January 2026 and began showing them in the US in February: sponsored cards placed below ChatGPT's answers, shown to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. The new test is the first time ads move into image generation, one of ChatGPT's most popular features.
OpenAI says ChatGPT now reaches about 1.2 billion people every week, which is why advertisers are paying close attention to every new placement.
What it means for brands
People open the image tool when they are already thinking visually: planning a party, mocking up a product, decorating a room. That is a strong moment for a brand to appear, but only if the ad looks as good as the images people are generating around it.
A plain stock-photo banner next to a fresh, cinematic AI image will look dated. Brands that want to win in placements like this will need scroll-stopping visuals, made fast and in many variations to test. That is exactly where AI video ads and AI-made product visuals help: high-end creative without a full production for every version. For now the test is US-only, so brands elsewhere have time to get their creative ready before it expands.
Questions people ask
When will ChatGPT show ads in image generation?
OpenAI says the test starts later in October 2026, in the United States only, with an initial group of advertisers.
Who will see ads while creating images in ChatGPT?
People in the US on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. ChatGPT's higher paid plans have stayed ad-free since ads first launched in February 2026.
Will ads appear inside the images ChatGPT creates?

What should brands do to get ready?
Prepare strong visual creative that can stand next to high-quality AI images, and test several versions. The test is US-only for now, so brands elsewhere have time to get ready before it expands. Papad Pixels can help with AI video ads and visuals.
